Nakai Theatre
Welcome to Nakai Theatre.
Nakai Theatre, based in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, is a non-profit professional theatre company dedicated to the development of live theatre that is relevant to northern audiences. Nakai is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatre.
Nakai is rooted in the new north, a landscape of contrary/ conflicting forces, such as globalism vs. regionalism, nature vs. urbanism, privilege vs. poverty, isolation vs. community and the indigenous culture vs. the colonizing culture.
The Yukon and therefore Nakai are about discovery, exploration, reinvention, adventure and beauty: new aesthetics, new work and new artists, new creation methods and new collaborations yield new realizations.
Our developmental activities – 24 Hour Competition & Cabaret, Homegrown Festival, Pivot Theatre Festival, Playlab, workshops, commissions and dramaturgy – are part of a multi-year stepped script development process designed to develop artists and their scripts to their fullest potential. This process provides artists with a well marked route consisting of increasing artistic challenges supported by increasing financial and dramaturgical expertise with exposure at higher profile venues. Some of these scripts will end up being fully produced by Nakai Theatre.
As well as our development activities, every January Nakai is proud to present new and challenging local, national and international theatre at our Pivot Theatre Festival.
